ROLAND SNOOKS

TOPIC: Kokkugia  - how to imagine the future

Roland Snooks is the director of the architecture practice Studio Roland Snooks and research lab Kokkugia.

Roland is a senior lecturer at RMIT University having previously taught widely in the US, including at Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, SCI-Arc and the Pratt Institute. Roland received a PhD from RMIT University, focused on behavioural processes of formation that draw from the logic of swarm intelligence. He holds a master in advanced architectural design from Columbia University where he studied on a Fulbright scholarship. In addition to his work with algorithmic design Roland directs the Architectural Robotics Lab at RMIT University.

Studio Roland Snooks explores the complexity of the contemporary social and natural world through the creation of objects, installations, public art and architectural projects. This work draws on an understanding of the underlying processes of formation that give rise to these contemporary conditions. The studio redeploys these processes through algorithmic techniques in the creation of highly detailed and intricate forms. We are a small, agile studio based in Melbourne that operates globally. We have an international network of expert collaborators to enable us to tackle complex and large-scale projects.

Studio Roland Snooks's work has been exhibited internationally and acquired by some of the world’s leading collections of modern art and design, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the FRAC Collection (France). The work has been published widely and is the subject of a forthcoming monograph (ACTAR Publishers - Barcelona). Roland is frequently invited to lecture and present his work internationally at the world’s leading schools of design.

We have a fascination with the impact of new technologies on form. The studio is at the forefront of new computational design processes and robotic fabrication techniques. We are focussed on how to develop and leverage these innovations to create intricately crafted forms.
