Electric cars operate using an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine. You may have heard of the term BEV, which stands for a Battery Electric Vehicle, or EV which stands for Electric Vehicle. Differently to petrol or diesel cars, electric cars need to be plugged in to a source of electricity in order to run, which you can do at home, at work or at a public charging station.
Plug-in hybrid cars, also known as PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles), are a cross between a combustion engine and an electric battery. This means you have the option to drive fully electric on shorter trips in to the city, or use the petrol or diesel engine for longer journeys.
